Munshiganj teacher Hridoy Chandra Mandal has been acquitted by the court from the case filed for defaming religion.

Judge Jashita Islam of Munshiganj Court-1 passed the order around 11am on Wednesday.

Hridoy Mandal's lawyer Shaheen Mohammad Amanullah confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

Earlier, in the final report given by the police in the court on August 8, the allegations levelled against Hridoy Mandal were proved to be false.

Shaheen Mohammad said the teacher appeared in court on Tuesday when Munshiganj Amli Court-1 took into account the final report of the police.

“Later on Wednesday, Hridoy Mandal was ordered to be discharged from the case,” he added.

Meanwhile, Hridoy Mandal claimed he and his family are being threatened and intimidated despite being cleared of the case.

He said: “I am receiving constant threats. Outsiders also come and talk aggressively to me at work.”

“Besides, threats are being made on mobile phones. One and a half months ago, a threat was received from an unknown number. After that, I filed a general diary at Munshiganj Sadar police station,” he added.
The teacher then continued by saying: “ Then after a month, I was threatened again by another unknown number. When the matter was reported to the police, officer Omar Roy asked to block the number.”

Hridoy Mandal mentioned that he stays at home most of the time as his house is covered by CC cameras.

Earlier on March 20, Hridoy Mandal’s conversation concerning science and religion that took place in a 10th-grade science lesson was filmed by a student and was perceived as a slight against religion.

Some students held protests outside the school on March 22 demanding Hridoy's punishment.

Later, Md Asad, the office assistant at the school, reported Hridoy Mondal for allegedly injuring religious feelings.

Police detained Hridoy that same day. He served 19 days in jail before being freed on April 10 amid a national uproar over this incident.

The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education established a one-person investigation team on April 11 under the leadership of Government Harganga College Principal Abdul Hai Talukdar.
