Members of the Diplomatic corps deployed in Bangladesh paid homage to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Tungipara in Gopalganj on Thursday.
The diplomats of 40 countries, led by Majid Halim of Morocco, the acting dean of the diplomatic corps, laid a wreath at his grave around 12:45pm.
Later, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam paid his respects on behalf of Bangladesh Foreign Ministry.
A one-minute silence was observed at the end of the tribute and prayers were offered for eternal peace of the souls of Bangabandhu and the members of his family assassinated on August 15, 1975.
Ambassadors of different countries including the acting dean of the diplomatic corps signed the visitors' book at the Bangabandhu Mausoleum Complex.
One or more delegations and High Commissioners of Afghanistan, Brazil, China, Germany, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Maldives, Morocco, Nepal, the Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan, Palestine, the Philippines, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, the UK, the USA, Vatican, the European Union, Kosovo and Algeria were present on the occasion.
Lawmaker Muhammad Farooq Khan, also the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Sabbir Ahmed Chowdhury, secretary (west) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Alauddin Bhuiyan, director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Office of the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs), Tariq Sujat, member of the National Implementation Committee, lawmaker Nahim Razzak, also a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Shamim Ahmed, the Awami League secretary for International Affairs, lawmaker Tanvir Shakil Joy, also a member of the Parliamentary Sub-Committee on International Relations of Bangladesh Awami League, among others, attended the event.
Later, the ambassadors visited Bangabandhu's ancestral home and library.
Besides, the guests also visited the folk fair held at the Government Sheikh Mujibur Rahman College and enjoyed cultural programs held in honor of foreign guests. Traditional boat races and acrobat exhibitions were also organized.
