The family of Md Hadisur Rahman, who was killed in March in a missile attack on a Bangladeshi vessel stranded at a Ukraine port, has received $505,000 (~Tk4.69 crore) in compensation from the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC).
State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury handed over the cheque to Hadisur’s father, Abdur Razzaque, at an event at BSC Tower in Dhaka on Thursday.
Hadiusur’s brother Tarikul Islam has been given a job at the BSC, which he joined on June 1.
Besides, the other crew members of the ship "Banglar Samriddhi" received their seven months' salaries on the occasion.
Senior officials of the ministry and the BSC were present at the program.
Hadisur’s family last month received Tk10.27 lakh in aid from the Bangladesh Merchant Marine Officers' Association (BMMOA).
“Banglar Samriddhi” was stranded at the Ukrainian port of Olvia with 29 crew members after Russia launched its invasion of its European neighbour in February.
On March 2, Hadisur Rahman was killed when a missile hit the ship.
On March 5, the 28 other sailors left the bunker (shelter house) adjacent to the port and set sail for Moldova.
The next day, they crossed the border and reached Romania.
On March 9, the 28 crew members returned to Dhaka from Istanbul on a Turkish Airlines flight from Bucharest airport in Romania.
The body of Md Hadisur Rahman reached Dhaka on March 14.
The Ukraine-war victim was laid to rest at his family graveyard in Betagi upazila of Barguna the next day.
