Ekushey Padak-winning singer Indramohan Rajbongshi dies of Covid-19

He received the Ekushey Padak in 2018 for his contribution to Folk music

Ekushey Padak-winning singer Indramohan Rajbongshi has died while receiving treatment for Covid-19.

Rajbongshi, who was also an artist at the Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra during the Liberation War, passed away at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib University Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at 10:25am on Wednesday, reports BSS.

Born in Dhaka, in 1952, Indramohan Rajbongshi was a known as versatile singer and researcher with expertise in singing in the genres of classic music and folk music.

In the early 1950s’, Rajbongshi started to learn music from his grandfather Krishna Das Rajbongshi, adds UNB.

In 1998, Rajbongshi established a folk organization, Bangladesh Lok Sangeet Parishad (Folk Song Council).

Rajbongshi has been closely associated with the Bangla film industry, and performed as playback singer and lyricist in many short films and feature films produced in Dhaka and Kolkata.

Indramohan received his Certificate of World Master from Kim Sung Oak, chairperson of The Association of World Masters for the Exchange of Arts and Culture.

He was awarded the best singer by the Bangladesh Cine Journalist Association in 1976 for the film “Nayan-Moni” directed by Amjad Hossain. 

He is also the proud recipient of the “Meril Jay Jay Din Award” in 1995 for being the best singer of the year.

President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of country’s eminent folksinger Indramohan Rajbongshi.
