In a 24-hour span until Thursday afternoon, Bangladesh recorded yet another 50 deaths from the novel coronavirus, raising the nationwide death toll to 2,801.
Over the same period, the total number of confirmed cases in the country leapt to 216,110 as another 2,856 people tested positive for Covid-19.
DGHS Additional Director General (Administration) Prof Nasima Sultana revealed the latest figures at a daily online bulletin on the Covid-19 pandemic on Thursday.

In the last 24 hours, a total of 12,398 samples were tested at 80 labs across the country to detect the new cases. The results depict a 23.04% infection rate.
Meanwhile, 2,006 patients successfully recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours, pushing up the tally to 119,208.
Among the total number of infections, 55.16% patients have recovered while 1.30% have died since the first Covid-19 positive cases were reported in the country on March 8, she said.

Without disclosing district-wise distribution, the DGHS official said most of the cases were in Dhaka, Narayanganj and Chittagong — the major Covid-19 “hotspots”.
Dhaka both as a district and a division has also been topping the death toll.
The deceased
As has been happening since the first death from the virus was reported in the country on March 18, most of Thursday’s victims were male. Only nine were female.
Forty-seven of the patients died at hospitals while three passed away at home.

Three of them were in their 30s, seven in their 40s, 12 in their 50s, 16 in their 60s, eight in their 70s, and four in their 80s, Prof Nasima Sultana said.
The division-wise data show that 20 deaths took place in Dhaka division, five in Chittagong division, six in Rajshahi division, seven in Khulna division, seven in Rangpur division and the rest in other divisions.
Of the deceased, a maximum of 2,801 people are male.

Of them, Nasima Sultana said, 1,361 deaths occurred in Dhaka division, 701 in Chittagong division, 158 in Rajshahi division, 188 in Khulna division, 106 in Barishal division, 129 in Sylhet division, 100 in Rangpur division and 58 in Mymensingh division.
She said altogether 10,79,907 samples had so far been tested since the detection of the first Covid-19 cases in the country.
Currently, 18,860 people are in isolation while 59,591 are at home and institutionally quarantined.
