A Dhaka court has placed Mosaddek Hanif Soad, owner of the Mayur-2 launch, on a three-day remand in the case filed for the Buriganga launch capsize that occurred on June 29.

A virtual court of Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Monika Khanam, passed the order after Sadarghat River Police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Shahidul Alam, who is also the investigation officer (IO) of this case, produced him before the court seeking a seven-day remand for interrogation on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Dhaka Bar Association President Iqbal Hossain stood for the accused.

Earlier in the day, River Police arrested Soad from Dhaka’s Sobhanbag area.

However, Abdus Salam, supervisor of Mayur-2 launch, who was arrested and placed on a three-day remand on June 7, was sent to jail after the IO of the case produced him before the court.

On June 30, a day after the launch capsize, SI Shamsul Alam of Sadarghat River Police station filed a case against seven people with South Keraniganj police station, including Abdus Salam.

The same day, Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Kamrunnaher Yeasmin set August 17 as the date for submitting a probe report after accepting the first investigation report (FIR) in the aforementioned case.

At least 34 people were killed when a small launch sank in the Buriganga River. The larger Mayur-2 launch in reverse, horrifically crashed into it near Farashganj Ghat in Dhaka on June 29, leaving the nation shocked.

As footage from a Sadarghat CCTV camera on the other side of the river revealed, and according to authorities and witnesses, the Morning Bird capsized in seconds after the bigger Mayur-2 crashed into it in reverse.

The three-deck Mayur-2 was on its way to dock at Sadarghat's terminal for Chandpur-bound vessels after unloading passengers at the Lalkuthi terminal.
