India's Border Security Force (BSF) handed over the body of a Bangladeshi man two days after he was beaten by a mob in Karimganj district of India's Assam.

The deceased Ranjit Rikmon was a tea worker in Moulvibazar's Juri upazila.

Lt Col Gazi Shahid Ullah, commanding officer of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) battalion 52, said the body was received through Sutarkandi border area around 4pm on Thursday.

Another Bangladeshi tea worker-- who crossed over to India with Ranjit, and got beaten by locals during the same incident-- is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in India's Karimganj.

He is under the custody of Indian police.

Indian police said at least seven persons crossed over to the Indian side on Monday and reportedly tried to steal a cow from a house in the Putni Tea Estate area near the border.

Locals suspected them of being cattle smugglers, and had beaten one of them to death and injured another while the rest managed to escape, according to Indian media reports.

Karimganj Superintendent of Police Kumar Sanjit Krishna said Indian police arrested one in connection with the lynching of Ranjit.
