Bangladesh has recorded the highest single day cases from coronavirus infection as 549 more people tested positive in the last 24 hours.
With the latest figure, the number of total confirmed cases jumped to 6,462.
Earlier on April 24, a total of 503 people tested positive for the infection, which was the highest number of cases recorded in a single day.
The country, however, witnessed a fall in death figures as three people have died of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, taking the number of fatalities to 155 in the country. It is the lowest number of deaths recorded in a single day since April 11.
Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Additional Director General (Administration) Prof Nasima Sultana revealed the latest figures in a daily online bulletin on Covid-19 situation from Dhaka on Tuesday afternoon.
She said as many as 4,309 samples were collected in the last 24 hours while 4,332 samples were tested, taking the total number of tests conducted so far to 55,733.
The rate of sample collection and tests conducted in past 24 hours are 2.79% and 13.64% higher respectively compared to those in the previous 24 hours ending on Monday, she said.
According to the DGHS, the government is planning to test 5,000 samples a day from May 1.
On Monday, Nasima Sultana stated that currently there were 25 laboratories in the country for testing Covid-19 samples while three more laboratories would be set up within a week.
In Tuesday's briefing, the DGHS official said all the new three deceased were aged above 60 years and the deaths occurred in Dhaka.
On April 20, the death toll from coronavirus infection crossed the 100 mark in Bangladesh.
On April 17, the country recorded the highest deaths (15) from the pandemic announced by the World Health Organization (WHO), since the country declared its first death on March 18.
Nasima said eight more people, who were treated in hospitals, have recovered from the disease, raising the total number of recoveries to 139.
"But most of the infected, who are recovering at home, are not added to the recovery list," she said.
As many as 1,248 people were put in isolation and of them, 785 were released so far, she said.
A total of 341 intensive care units (ICUs) and 102 dialysis units are ready for the Covid-19 patients in the isolation centres at different hospitals across the country, she said.
The DGHS official said the government has prepared 601 institutions across Bangladesh for institutional quarantine where 30,635 people can avail instant services.
She asserted that there were no shortage of testing kits and health protective equipment in the country.
On March 8, the health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first case of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new strain of coronavirus named Sars-CoV-2 that broke out in China's Wuhan in December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 212,265 lives and infected 3,079,972 people across the world till 4:40pm on Tuesday, according to worldometer.
As many as 928,995 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 210 countries and territories across the planet.
