Hailing the arrest of Abdul Majed, a convicted killer of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has expressed optimism about bringing back the remaining fugitive killers in the ongoing Mujib Year.
"We have got good news amidst the corona crisis. Abdul Majed, one of the killers of Bangabandhu has been arrested," he said in a statement.
"We had hoped that at least one of the fugitive killers would be brought back to face justice. Deepest gratitude to Allah, that has been possible," said the foreign minister.
However, he said five killers are still at large.
Of them, one is in the United States and one is in Canada he said, without mentioning the whereabouts of the other three.
"We hope it will be possible to bring back the remaining killers to face justice in Mujib Year," Dr Momen said.
"For that, cooperation from the people of the country and Bangladeshis abroad is necessary alongside government initiatives", he said.
Majed was arrested from Dhaka’s Mirpur Cantonment area late on Monday by the counter-terrorism unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Amid tight security on Tuesday, he was produced before the court of the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate.
No lawyer defended Majed in court when police pleaded with the court for an order to send him to prison.
Following the court order, police took Majed to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.
Media reports at various times over the last four decades indicated that Mazed was hiding in Pakistan and Libya before living in neighbouring India for the last few years.
