Floral tributes were paid to Bangabandhu’s portrait by Assistant High Commissioner of Agartala Mohammad Shakhawat Hossain and Jishnu Debbarman.Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s 99th birth anniversary was celebrated nationwide with due pomp as it coincided with Bangladesh becoming a developing country from a least developed country and National Children’s Day.
Awami League district units organized festivities to commemorate the event in their own ways.
The focal point was in Tungipara, Gopalganj where Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid her respects to her father. She greeted President Abdul Hamid when he arrived and they paid homage to Bangabandhu together.
They were followed by Awami League leaders led by General Secretary and Road, Transport and Bridges Minister who paid their respects.
Cabinet members and the chiefs of the three armed forces were also among the dignitaries who visited the grave of the Father of the Nation.
The memorial complex was covered by wreaths of flowers laid down by the visitors.
Gopalganj district administration organized children-centred festivities where PM Hasina spoke as the chief guest. The prime minister also unveiled post stamps commemorating her late younger brother Sheikh Russell.
Exhibitions of artworks by children were also on display in Tungipara. Children also performed a number of cultural acts to the delight of the eminent audience.
