Suranjit was an inseparable part of Bangladesh’s history of struggle, he said.
Finanace Minister Muhith remarked that Suranjit was as old as Bangladeshi politics and there were very few politicians of his calibre left.

Later his body was taken to Dhakeshwari Temple where people of different communities paid respect to him. Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu, Chief Justice SK Sinha, DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokan, PM’s International Affairs Secretary Gowher Rizvi and the Indian deputy high commissioner among others went there.
His body was brought to the parliament around 3pm, where he was given a guard of hounor as the only civilian sub-sector commander in the sector 5 in the 1971 Liberation War.

His only son Soumen Sengupta said his father was a progressive person and had struggled throughout his life for the people and for secularism.
At 4:40pm the parliament raised a condolence motion for Suranjit.
His body will be taken to sylhet on Monday morning at 10am. The seven times elected lawmaker Suranjit Sengupta was pronounced dead by doctors at Dhaka’s Labaid Hospital early on Sunday, according to his personal secretary Kamrul Hasan.
Suranjit had been admitted there on Friday with lung infection and placed in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) under the supervision of Professor Baren Chakrabarty.
Later in the night he was put on ventilation. He was declared dead at 4:24am. His death was preceded by prolonged complications of cancer.
Suranjit was 72. He left his wife Jaya Sengupta and only son Soumen.
Colleagues and followers rushed to the hospital at the news. Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader came in at 7am at the hospital. He told the press he was at a loss for words at the death.
Suranjit was taken to his residence at Jigatola, where Speaker of the Parliament Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapas MP, Energy Adviser to the Prime Minister Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, Chief Whip ASM Feroz, Awami League Publicity and Publication Secretary Hasan Mahmud, Swechchhasebak League President Pankaj Debnath and the top brass of the government and ruling party arrived to pay last respects.
