60 injured as clash erupted during March for Justice program in Khulna

At least 60 people were injured in a clash between police and protesters on Wednesday when the student blocked various roads in the city during their March for Justice program.

The protesters observed the program seeking the implementation of a 9-point demand under the anti-discrimination student movement.

The clashes reportedly led to around 100 arrests.

The clash started from the Satrasta intersection at 2pm on Wednesday.

Later it spread to Royal Mor, Shantidham, Modern Furniture Mor, Baitipara, Moulvipara, PTI Mor.

In the hour-long clash, the police fired sound grenades, tear shells, and rubber bullets at the students.

 The agitators claimed that around 60 students were injured. Police arrested more than a hundred students from different areas.

Md Kamal Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station, said that police announced on Tuesday that no student would be allowed to protest. They have taken the law into their own hands and attacked the police. The police have now brought the situation under control.

On behalf of the protesting students, Al Shahriar said that at least 60 students were injured as police charged batons and fired teargas. They are being treated in different hospitals in the city.

An allegation has been raised that extensive searches were conducted at important intersections. Police also arrested people when they saw the red profile picture on Facebook by checking the mobile phone of the commuters on the road.

A section of students took shelter in Ahsanullah College after being chased by the police at around 1pm.

They entered a room inside the building and locked it. Later the police broke the lock and arrested the students.

The agitators said that the March for Justice program of the anti-discrimination student movement was held on Wednesday to demand justice for the killing of students killed across the country.

Meanwhile, the administration of Khulna University (KU) has called upon lawenforcers not to harass students. 

This information was informed in a circular sent by the public relations and publication department of the university on July 31.

It is said in the circular, various news of taking action against various persons for allegedly indulging in violence and law and order activities centring the quota reform movement is being observed in the media.

In this process, the university authorities are calling on all concerned including the law and order forces to ensure that no innocent student of Khulna University is harassed.

The notification also said that if any student of Khulna University is harassed, he has been instructed to inform the office of the director of student affairs. All possible cooperation will be provided from the university in this regard. Khulna University administration wishes the students all round well.
