After the arrest of Liton Sarkar in Dhaka for his alleged involvement in a PSC question paper leak, his family has been left disappointed, as they strictly maintained his education.

Liton Sarkar is the son of Nirmal Sarkar from Barpaika village, a remote area of Ratnapur union under Agoiljhara upazila in Barisal district. Journalists visiting the tin-shed village house of Liton found that his father, Nirmal Sarkar, his uncles Sunil Sarkar and Swapan Sarkar, and their families live there.

Liton has siblings, including his brother Subrata Sarkar and his married sister Shiuli Sarkar.

Nirmal Sarkar said that his son passed SSC in the science department from Barpaika Secondary School in 2013 and was admitted to Barishal Amrita Lal Dey College. He passed the HSC examination in 2015 and was admitted to a private university in Dhaka.

The family sold 50 decimals of land, and gold ornaments, and took a loan from the bank to pay for his studies. They questioned why he would get involved in crime.

Liton's uncle, Sunil Sarkar, said they have been working as day labourers to bear the cost of living. "We could not believe that he would do this. He may have fallen into a trap."

Two months ago, Liton married Susmita, a banker from the Rakhaltala area under Swarupkathi upazila of Pirojpur. Liton's family believes he committed this crime because of someone's greed.

When asked if Liton could act like a criminal, his aunt Namita said: "We consider him like God. He was either threatened or greedy for money."

Liton's father, a carpenter, fell ill after hearing the news of his son's arrest. As a result, the family is struggling to pay for food.

Liton's neighbor, Maya Sarkar, said that their economic condition is very bad. "If his mother asks us for help, we give it. His mother suffered a lot for Liton. They earn a livelihood by working as laborers on others' land. His uncles always supported the expenses of livelihood and education for Liton."

Bidhan Roy, a member of Ward No. 2 of Ratnapur UP of Agoiljhara Upazila, said: "I know Liton. He was a good boy. I heard he is a software engineer. His family has not told me anything about his involvement in the question leak. I heard in public discussions and criticisms that he was involved in leaking BCS exam questions."

Agoiljhara Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Mohammad Zahirul Islam said: "We have not received any information regarding the arrest of Liton Sarkar in Dhaka. We will investigate and report as per the direction of higher authorities."
