JU Chhatra League leader accused of raping woman inside campus

A Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit Chhatra League leader has been accused of raping a woman after locking her husband at the university’s Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall.

The woman was violated in the adjacent area of the hall at around 9pm on Saturday.

The accused are Mostafizur Rahman, a student of the 45th batch of the International Relations Department of the university, and a man named Mamun, 45. 

Mostafizur is a resident student of the Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall. He is the international affairs secretary of the university unit Chhatra League. While Mamun used to live with the couple in a rented house.

Ashulia police station at around 3am on Sunday detained four people, including Mostafizur, over the incident.

The other detainees are Hasanuzzaman from the 45th batch of the International Relations Department of the university, Sagor Siddiqui from the 46th batch and Sabbir Hossen from the 47th batch of the Botany Department. 

They were detained as they were seen assisting the accused and helping them escape from the campus in a CCTV footage. 

On Saturday evening, Mamun called the woman’s husband to the university and locked him inside the hall room. He later asked the woman to also visit him at the university and took her to the secluded area where he said her husband would arrive later.

The rape survivor said she was asked to go to the campus by Mamun as he said he would not stay with them anymore. 

Mostafizur Rahman could not be contacted even after several tries. His mobile phone was later found switched off. 

Professor Sabbir Alam, provost of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall of the university, said: "I have heard about the incident. Action will be taken after an investigation.”

Abdur Rasik, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Savar Model police station, said the rape survivor reported the incident to the police station. “We are going to the spot for preliminary investigation. Further action will be taken after that.”

University Proctor ASM Firoz Ul Hasan said: “If the police want any kind of cooperation from us, we are ready to cooperate. Attempts are being made to collect CCTV footage of the incident Whoever is involved in the incident, we will take disciplinary action.”

Akhtaruzzaman Sohel, president of the JU unit Chhata League, said: "Mustafizur Rahman has been expelled from the Jahangirnagar University unit based on the allegations raised against him.”

They have issued a notice in this regard. 

JU unit Chhatra League branch Chhatra League's General Secretary Habibur Rahman Liton said they have done a heinous act. “We want the highest punishment for this incident based on investigation.”
