Mabia Akter Shimanta broke her own national record and set a new one in the snatch, winning the gold medal in the women's 64kg weight category at the National Weightlifting Championship held in the capital Sunday.

The accomplished weightlifter lifted a total of 180kg, comprising 81kg in snatch and 99kg in clean and jerk.

During the ninth Bangladesh Games in 2021, Mabia had previously set the national record in snatch at 80kg, which also earned her a gold.

"It feels great to break my own record, but it requires a tremendous amount of hard work to set a new one," Mabia told Dhaka Tribune after her latest achievement.

"I've lost count of how many times I have broken my own records. Since 2014, I have been consistently setting new records in almost every competition," she added.

Mabia gained significant attention when she made her debut at the South Asian Games in Guwahati, India in 2016, where she secured a gold in the same weight category.

Despite gaining weight in the subsequent SA Games in Kathmandu, Nepal in 2019, where she competed in the 76kg category, Mabia managed to clinch the gold.

The 23-year old athlete managed to shed 12kg in less than two years to return to her preferred weight category and continues to dominate the sport in her country.
