Bangabandhu International Volleyball: Rampant Bangladesh reach semis

Host Bangladesh reached the semi-final of the Bangabandhu Asian Senior Men's Central Zone International Volleyball Championship 2018 as Group A champion after beating Maldives comfortably by 3-0 sets at Shaheed Suhrawardi Indoor Stadium in Mirpur Monday. Maldives managed to earn the first two points of the game before the home side took control of the driving seat en route to a 25-15 points win in the opening set. Bangladesh won the second set by the same margin before facing a stiff contest from the visitor in the third set where they had to toil hard while winning by 25-22 points. Mohammad Mohsin was adjudged best player of the match, the first time in his five-year career that he has been named the best player.

Horshid Biswas was adjudged the best spiker of the game while Ahmed of Maldives became the best blocker. Bangladesh's opponent in the last four will be decided Tuesday when Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan take on each other in the last match of the group stage and the winner of the tie will get the home side in the first semi-final, scheduled for Wednesday. Meanwhile in the day's other Group B game, Turkmenistan outplayed Uzbekistan by 3-1 sets, winning by 25-18, 25-22, 25-18 points, and losing only the second set by 26-28 points. The third day of the tournament was graced by the presence of Bangladesh Olympic Association secretary general Syed Shahed Reza and Bangladesh Volleyball Federation president Mohammad Atiqul Islam.
