Bangladesh hammer Iran 9-3 in Women’s Hockey5s Asia Cup

With 2 wins and a defeat, Bangladesh moved to 2nd spot out of 6 teams in the Challengers group where Hong Kong sit on top with maximum 9 points

Bangladesh women’s hockey team carried on their fine form in the Women’s Hockey five-a-side Asia Cup in Salalah, Oman as they thrashed Iran 9-3 Saturday.

They defeated Chinese Taipei 10-5 the previous day before romping to another big-margin win through the magnificent efforts of in-form Airin Riya and Orpita Pal.

Orpita, who slammed nine goals in the previous two matches, opened the scoring with a pierce finish in the first minute before adding two more while Riya, who had five goals before, netted four.

Mukta Khatun and Mosammat Akter also bagged their first goals of the competition, which is also considered the qualifiers for the World Cup.

Elmira Poupash, Rezazad Zahra and Abbasi Pania scored one each for Iran.

With two wins and a defeat, Bangladesh moved to second spot out of six teams in the Challengers group where Hong Kong sit on top with maximum nine points.

Bangladesh will face hosts Oman later Saturday before concluding their group campaign against Hong Kong Sunday.

Ten countries – split into two groups – are competing in the tournament which will continue till Monday.

The Elite Pool, comprising the top teams of Asia, have India, Japan, Malaysia and Thailand.

Three teams from the qualifying round will play the World Cup.
