Bangladesh began their Fifth Men's Asian Hockey Federation Cup campaign with a comfortable 4-2 victory over hosts Hong Kong in the opening match of Pool A at King’s Park Stadium on Saturday.
Drag-and-flick specialist Mamunur Rahman Chayan and experienced forward Russel Mahmud Jimmy netted two apiece to guide the men in red and green to a confident start.
Chayan opened the scoring in the 22nd minute before doubling the lead just three minutes later. Both the goals came from penalty corners.
Bangladesh, who are the reigning champions having won the last two AHF Cup titles in 2012 in Thailand and 2008 in Singapore, went to the break with a 3-1 lead after Jimmy scored his first goal in the 33rd minute from a penalty stroke.
Tsang Kin Kan pulled one back for the home side only two minutes later.
Hong Kong captain Siu Chung Ming reduced the margin in the 42nd minute but Bangladesh captain Jimmy scored again in the 52nd minute from a field goal to seal victory.
Bangladesh are in Pool A along with Chinese Taipei, Macau and Hong Kong while Group B comprises Sri Lanka, Thailand, Singapore and Uzbekistan.
Bangladesh will face Chinese Taipei on Monday before taking on Macau in their last group stage match this Wednesday.
Meanwhile, prior to the tournament, Bangladesh spent around a fortnight in Europe playing a total of eight warm-up matches, including five against Poland and three against Austria.
If Bangladesh do seal third straight crown in the tournament then they would get direct entry into next year’s Asia Cup.RESULTBangladesh 4 (Chayan 22, 25, Jimmy 33, 52) 2 Hong Kong (Kan 35, Ming 42)
