Abdus Sadeque, a renowned former hockey and football player, coach and sports organiser, passed away at a hospital in Gulshan, Dhaka, on Saturday morning. He was 78.

The National Sports Award winner's death was confirmed by family members and sports officials, prompting tributes from the country's sporting fraternity.

In a social media statement, his son, Zeeshan Sadeque, announced the news after his father's prolonged illness.

"With profound sadness, we announce the passing of my beloved father, Abdus Sadeque. He fought a valiant battle for almost a year," he wrote.

The family said the first Janaza prayer would be held after Asr prayers at Baitus Sobhan Mosque in Bashundhara, while a second Janaza will take place at Banani DOHS Field at 10:30am on Sunday.

The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) paid tribute to Sadeque, describing him as one of the nation's most revered sports personalities.

"Bangladesh has lost one of its most respected sporting figures," the federation said in a statement. "Throughout a distinguished career as a player, captain, coach, organiser and sports administrator, he made immense contributions to the development of sports in Bangladesh."

The BFF highlighted his role as captain of the first international hockey team of independent Bangladesh and praised a legacy that continues to inspire generations of athletes.

The Bangladesh Hockey Federation (BHF) also expressed deep sorrow at the passing of one of the country's greatest hockey icons and prayed for the eternal peace of his departed soul.

Born in Dhaka on January 2, 1948, Sadeque emerged from the famed sporting culture of Armanitola School and quickly established himself as one of the country's finest all-round athletes.

Although he excelled in football, cricket and athletics, it was hockey that brought him national and international recognition. He remains the only hockey player to have represented both Pakistan and Bangladesh at the international level.

Following Bangladesh's independence, he became a pivotal figure in the national hockey setup, captaining Bangladesh at the 1978 Asian Games in Bangkok and playing a key role in the country's early international hockey journey.

At club level, Sadeque enjoyed notable success with Combined Sporting Club, Ispahani Club and later Abahani Krira Chakra, winning numerous domestic titles before retiring from competitive hockey in 1981.

His sporting achievements were not limited to hockey. He was also a top-flight footballer who represented Azad Sporting Club, Dilkusha Sporting Club and Abahani.

After retiring as a player, Sadeque continued to serve Bangladeshi sport as a coach, administrator and organiser.

He guided both Abahani's football and hockey teams to major domestic successes and later served several terms as general secretary of the Bangladesh Hockey Federation. He also managed the national hockey team in international competitions.

Abdus Sadeque leaves behind a legacy that transcended sporting disciplines. His contributions helped shape generations of athletes and secured his place among the most influential figures in Bangladesh's sporting history.
