Ctg Abahani hold BJMC

Update : 23 May 2014, 09:42 PM

A late goal by Abdul Hannan helped Chittagong Abahani earn a crucial point in the Nitol-Tata Bangladesh Premier Football League as the bottom-ranked side and Team BJMC played out a 1-1 draw at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.

Struggling BJMC halted a run of defeats stretching back four games and earned their first point since their dramatic victory over Mohammedan SC last month. The draw, however, did not change Chittagong Abahani’s position from the bottom of the table although they closed the gap with Feni Soccer Club to two points. BJMC remained at sixth with 19 points, four points behind fifth-placed Muktijoddha Sangsad.

BJMC dominated the game but the port-city outfit initiated the first attack in the 11th minute. Guinean midfielder Mohamed Conte tried his luck from 25 yards out but his powerful effort went just outside the bar. Six minutes later, in-form BJMC striker Ismael Bangoura headed over the bar following a cross from Saiful Islam. Conte saw another powerful strike from 30 yards fly inches over the bar three minutes into the second half.

Ismael Bangoura, who netted four goals in the previous five matches, put BJMC ahead in the 79th minute after unselfish play by Nabib Nawaj Jibon. Mahmudul Hasan provided a lovely cross from the left flank which found Jibon in the middle of the box. Jibon passed it to an unmarked Bangoura inside the box and the Guinean striker buried home into an empty net. It was Bangoura’s eighth goal in the league this season.

BJMC almost doubled the lead in the 85th minute when Ali Akbar Kanon’s header hit the sidebar after a neat cross from Bangoura.

Against the run of play in the same minute, Abdul Hannan restored parity after a quick counter-attack. Sohel Mia fed the ball with a cutback to Hannan whose angular shot from the edge of the box hit the gloves of diving BJMC keeper Arifuzzaman Hemel before it rolled into the net.

Meanwhile in the day’s other match, Soccer Club came from behind to hold Muktijoddha to a 1-1 draw at the Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni Stadium in Gopalganj. Muktijoddha took the lead in the 34th minute through Shafiqul Islam Bipul before Gambian midfielder Landing Darboe cancelled out the lead in the 40th minute.
