Abahani thrash Jamal to reach Fed Cup semi

Update : 03 Jan 2022, 11:19 PM

Dhaka Abahani Limited showcased a goal rout in the quarter final of the Federation Cup ’21 as they beat Sheikh Jamal DC by 6-0 at the Bir Shreshtha Shipahi Mohammad Mostafa Kamal Stadium in Kamalapur yesterday.

Local marksman Nabib Newza Jibon and Brazilian striker Dorelton Gomes scored brace each while Costa Rican Daniel Colindres and Brazil Raphael Augusto scored one goal apiece for the Dhanmondi-based club.

It took 22 minutes for the men in sky blue to break the deadlock when a Colindres free kick was converted by a Dorelton tap in. Abahani were awarded a penalty ten minutes later as Rakib Hossain was fouled by Jamal’s Shakil Ahmed. Raphael converted with a neat spot kick to make it 2-0.

Rakib missed an easy chance at the later stage of the first half but Abahani continued their domination in the second half. Dorelton was once again assisted by a defence breaching pass which was sent home by the Brazilian before evading a defender through body dodge.

Colindres put his name in the score sheet in the 70th minute when his thunderbolt free-kick from 25-metre area gave no chance to Jamal players of reacting.

Even after leading by a 4-0 lead Abahani juggernaut was not stopped as the substitute Jibon was eager to join the goal fest.

He got his first goal in the 81st minute by a placement shot off a Monir Alam cross and completed his brace six minutes later when he received a Milad Sheikh pass with chest before slotting the ball home.

Earlier in the day, Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society stunned Sheikh Russel KC by 4-3 to get their semifinal berth. The stipulated 90 minute was finished on 3-3 before Ashraful Alam scored the deciding goal in the 119th minute of the match.

Abahani will face Saif SC in their semifinal match on Thursday while Mohammedan SC will lock horns with Rahmatganj on the same day at the same venue.
