Worries remain with finishing

The women in red and green beat the UAE and Kyrgyzstan 2-0 and 2-1 respectively in the group stage, but did spurn several goal-scoring opportunities

Bangladesh might have qualified for the semi-final of the Bangamata U-19 Women’s Gold Cup as Group B champion but the home side are anything but happy with their finishing touch.

The women in red and green beat the UAE and Kyrgyzstan 2-0 and 2-1 respectively in the group stage, but did spurn several goal-scoring opportunities.

And ahead of their last four clash Tuesday against the runners-up side of Group A at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka, Bangladesh head coach Golam Rabbani Choton said they will need to work on their finishing.

“Our finishing in the second game was better than the first. But before the semi, we must work more on our finishing, because we have a problem here. We cannot be satisfied with our finishing,” said Choton to the media Saturday.

Bangladesh captain Mosammat Mishrat Jahan Mousumi echoed the same sentiment.

“We have a lot of expectation on us, but we are not being able to fulfill it. On behalf of our team, I am apologizing to our countrymen. We are trying, we are even getting opportunities, it’s just that we are not being able to finish. If our finishing was good, we could have perhaps won by eight-nine goals,” said Mousumi.

She added, “Of course we are happy to finish as group champion. The girls tried their best throughout the 90 minutes. We scored within 29 seconds against Kyrgyzstan. We will try to play better in the last four.”

From the other group, Laos have been the most impressive side thus far as they thrashed Mongolia 5-0.

Bangladesh winger Sanjida Akhter though said they are not quaking in their boots at the prospect of a potential match-up with Laos in the semi or in the final.

“Like Laos, our team are also good. We are hoping to play the final. If we face them in the final, it will be an exciting clash. We have played against the likes of Australia, Japan and Korea. So we are not fearful of anyone,” said Sanjida.
