Southpaws Tanzid, Shamim ready to make an impression

The young duo were named in the 17-member squad Saturday for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023

Left-handed batters Tanzid Hasan Tamim and Shamim Hossain Patwari are the two new faces in the Bangladesh one-day international fold.

The duo were named in the 17-member squad Saturday for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023.

Middle-order batsman Shamim has been part of the national set-up since 2021 and has played 17 Twenty20 internationals till date.

There are questions regarding his inclusion in the ODI set-up as there are no highlightable performances rather just being in the good books of head coach Chandika Hathurusingha.

Thus, the focus is solely on the freshest name in the dressing room – 22-year old Tanzid who has deservingly made his way into the national team riding on impressive performances, as well as some luck with his idol and prominent opener Tamim Iqbal missing from the tournament due to lower-back injury.

Tanzid’s performance in the recently held Emerging Asia Cup 2023 in Sri Lanka was the chief reason behind the selectors putting their trust on him.

The opening batter scored 179 runs in four games, including three half-centuries, propelled by aggressive batting.

Tanzid has also performed well in the domestic circuit.

In the last edition of the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, the southpaw garnered 474 runs in 11 matches, laced with two centuries and one fifty, with a strike of 93.3.

In his List A career so far, Tanzid has accumulated 1,271 runs in 46 games, involving seven half-centuries and three hundreds, at an average of 28.88.

In youth ODIs, Tanzid has played 34 games and totaled 1,018 runs with one ton and eight fifties.

“The national selection panel is very confident with Tanzid Tamim. He has been nursed well in the High-Performance Unit and played well in the last Emerging Cup. I will hope he will make use of the opportunity and do well for the team and the country,” said chief of the national selection panel Minhajul Abedin Saturday.

Tanzid, well known in the circuit for his attacking form of batting, while taking photo with the ICC Cricket World Cup trophy at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium last week had said, “The dream will one day come true by the grace of God.”
