The recent reported bulldozer attack and arson on the home of an Awami League leader in Patuakhali represent a deeply disturbing episode that has no place in a society governed by the rule of law.

No grievance, allegation, or disagreement can ever justify the use of violence against people or property. Such actions erode public confidence in the institutions responsible for upholding the law, and encourage a culture where force is perceived as a legitimate means of settling disputes.
If left unchecked, this mindset risks becoming normalized, creating an environment where similar incidents become more frequent and increasingly severe.

At the same time, Bangladesh must address the mentality that fuels such incidents. Respect for legal processes, tolerance of differing views, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts are essential pillars of any democratic society.
Public awareness, stronger law enforcement, and consistent accountability all have a role to play in reversing the growing acceptance of mob behaviour and vigilante actions.
Violence cannot be allowed to become an accepted language of disagreement. This attack should serve as a wake-up call for both the authorities and society at large. Such acts must be unequivocally rejected, and every effort must be made to ensure they are never repeated.
