Bangladesh would like to maintain their dominance over defending World Test Championship winners New Zealand, said left-arm pacer Shoriful Islam.
The opening day of the first Test at Mount Maunganui Saturday saw tourists Bangladesh rule the roost, keeping the opposition at bay.
At stumps New Zealand posted 258 runs losing five wickets with Shoriful leading the bowling chart.
The young pacer along with Taskin Ahmed gave away just one run in the first 7.3 overs of the day.
Shoriful removed Tom Latham for one and set forth a testing first hour for Devon Conway and Will Young.
Conway and Young added 138 for the second wicket but the late wickets of centurion Conway and Tom Blundell kept the tourists in the game.
Shoriful finished the day with two wickets conceding 53 runs in 20 overs.
Ebadat Hossain and captain Mominul Haque picked up one scalp each.
Mehedi Hasan Miraz remained wicketless but was applauded for being economical, leaking 72 runs in 27 overs.
“It felt good to bowl the first hour of the day. There was good movement and swing too. I enjoyed the time bowling,” said Shoriful to the media after the end of the day's play.
Shoriful informed that the job for Bangladesh on day two will be to keep the opposition run rate in check and get them all-out in the least time possible.
For the Kiwis Conway scored highest 122, his maiden century in his first Test at home.
The left-handed batsman was removed by Mominul, an occasional left-arm spinner.
Shoriful opined that Conway's wicket put Bangladesh on top at the end of the day.
“Conway’s wicket was very important. Mominul bhai took that wicket. We will try to keep the run rate in control and get them all-out early,” said Shoriful.
“We are happy with the performance but there is always the craving – only if we had taken a couple of more wickets,” the 20-year old added.
