Six-team special BPL to begin Jan 21, players' draft on Dec 27

Curtains on the eighth edition of the Bangladesh Premier League T20 will be raised on January 21.
BPL governing council member secretary Ismail Haider Mallick while speaking to the media Wednesday informed that Tk1 crore has been set as the championship money for the special edition of the BPL, set to mark the birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The grand finale of the tournament will be held on February 18.
The BPL GC was considering having a grand opening ceremony for the eighth BPL, which however is now unlikely.
“There was a bit of uncertainty with the upcoming season of BPL. There was issue with the national team’s tour of New Zealand for the Test series. We had taken all preparation. This season we will have six teams participating. Conditions to the teams have already been served, such as they need to provide the bank guarantee, submit the participating fee, among others," said Mallick following a meeting at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
"We will accept those teams who serve the conditions by a day or two. If not we have two to three more parties as backup who are interested to take the teams. Dhaka, Sylhet, Khulna, Barisal, Chattogram and Cumilla are the teams this season,” the influential BCB director added.
The runners-up team will bag Tk50 lakhs.
The BPL GC has also set the grindings and remuneration of both local and overseas cricketers who will be put up for the players’ draft.
The players’ draft is scheduled to take place this Monday and if delayed the event will be held between January 3 to 5.
A team is allowed to take one local and three overseas cricketers out of the draft this season.
“A player can get any amount as remuneration if signed out of the draft. In the draft we have set Tk70, 35, 25, 18 and 12 lakhs as per respective grading for the local cricketers. For overseas the highest is $75,000 followed by 50, 30, 25 and 20 [in thousands],” informed Mallick.
The BPL GC is strongly in favor of the national team cricketers getting enough time to rest and recover once they return from New Zealand.
Any national team cricketer, part of the ongoing tour of New Zealand, missing out on matches in the initial part of BPL will be paid in full, the BPL GC is mulling.
“The national team will return on January 14 or 15. So they will get some four to five days of rest if we start BPL on January 21. BCB president Nazmul Hasan bhai told the BPL GC to consider giving rest if anyone asks for it. There will be no issue with their remuneration. We will discuss it with the team owners,” Mallick explained.
Mallick informed that the 34-match tournament will be held at three venues – Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet - and two games will be played each day.
The first game is scheduled to begin at 1pm while the second will start following a two-hour break.
