Sunrisers managed 155/6 in their allotted 20 overs after being set 173 to win by Kolkata.
Kolkata have now won five games against Sunrisers at Eden Gardens, the most against any team without losing at one venue.
Sunrisers won the toss and asked Kolkata to bat first. Kolkata reached 172/5, thanks to a 39-ball 68 by wicketkeeper-batsman Robin Uthappa before top-order batter Manish Pandey hit 46 in 35 balls. Uthappa struck five fours and four sixes in his knock while Pandey hammered three boundaries and a couple of sixes.
Seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the most successful Sunrisers bowler with three wickets, conceding 20 runs in his quota of four overs.
Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan, pacer Ashish Nehra and Australia all-rounder Ben Cutting picked up one wicket each.
Chasing, Sunrisers lost wickets at regular intervals and ultimately lost by 17 runs. Middle-order batsman Yuvraj Singh (26), skipper David Warner (26), opener Shikhar Dhawan (23) and lower-order batter Bipul Sharma (21 not out) all got starts but were unable to convert into substantial knock.
West Indian mystery spinner Sunil Narine stood out with figures of 4-0-18-1. He received able support from England all-rounder Chris Woakes, part-time spinner Yusuf Pathan, chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav and New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult, who shared five wickets between themselves.
Uthappa was adjudged player of the match for his brisk knock.
