Moments of the day, 1st Test, Day 3: Bangladesh's poor start and Miraz's matured batting

Update : 09 Mar 2017, 11:26 PM
Poor start to the dayFollowing a good opening stand on day two, Bangladesh started day three poorly as overnight batsman Soumya Sarkar got out cheaply. Soumya had to carry his innings and convert it into a big one as the wicket was still good for the batsmen. However, a casual shot proved to be his undoing. The incident happened in the last ball of the 49th over. Suranga Lakmal bowled a short ball in the line of the leg stump and Soumya played a half-hearted pull. He was initially trying to avoid the ball but changed his mind at the last moment, playing it off his hip. The top-edge flew straight to the hands of the fine leg fielder who grasped it easily. And so, yet another promising Soumya innings was not converted to a significant score.Miraz’s matured battingYoungster Mehedi Hasan Miraz made a stunning debut in Test cricket when he grabbed 19 wickets against England at home last year. He was originally considered a batting all-rounder in the U-19 level. But, his bowling performance has proved to be the real deal. In comparison, his batting display has not been upto the mark in recent times. He scored one, one, one, two, nought and one in his first six innings. Miraz however, eventually showed some of his batting brilliance during the Hyderabad Test as he composed a fifty. He also played a vital innings on Thursday, scoring 41. With Bangladesh in all sorts of trouble, Miraz formed a vital 106-run partnership with Test captain Mushfiqur Rahim to save his side from the dreaded follow on target. Miraz’s batting ability is a good sign for Bangladesh as his presence in the lower middle order will surely boost the side in future.
