Metro fall to innings defeat in three days at NCL

Batting debacles in both innings saw Dhaka Metropolis lose their fifth round match of the National Cricket League against Dhaka Division within three days by an innings and 161 runs on Wednesday at Shaheed Chandu Stadium, Bogra.

In another match of the round at Cricket Garden, Rangpur, the hosts bundled out Rajshahi Division for 248 runs to get an 88-run first innings lead before ending the day on 20-1 in their second innings.

Meanwhile, two other matches - Barishal Division against Khulna Division at Barishal Divisional Stadium and Chittagong Division against Sylhet Division at Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium Academy Ground, Cox's Bazar - saw no action even after three days due to inclement weather.

At Bogra, Metro resumed their second innings on 59-2 and needed another 268 runs to avoid the follow-on. But only the overnight batsman Shadman Islam, who made 66, got a half-century and the combined efforts of Dhaka bowlers forced them to face the ignominy of an innings defeat.

Shadman took the score to 122 with another overnight batsman Mohammad Ashraful but man of the match Shuvagata Hom got rid of Sadman and the Metro innings derailed.

Ashraful, who made 34, left the side on 134-4 before the rest of batsmen fell in regular intervals. Left-arm spinner Taibur Rahman got 4-31, Mosharraf Hossain grabbed 3-34 while Shuvagata, who scored century for Dhaka, got two wickets.

Metro declared their first inning on 59-8 before Dhaka made 386 in reply.

At Rangpur, Rajshahi resumed on 64-2 but overnight batsman Junaid Siddique got out for 48 and the visitors were reduced to 83-3 in reply of 336. But another overnight batsman Farhad Hossain added 90 runs with skipper Jahurul Islam and Rajshahi were cruising at that stage.

However, Rangpur pacer Robiul Haque not only bowled Farhad for 71 but also instigated a middle order collapse that saw Rajshahi crumble to 179-7 at one stage. The last three pairs for Rajshahi added 69 runs but that was not enough to prevent the opponents getting a crucial first-innings lead.

Robiul ended with 4-62 while his new ball partner Subhashish Ghosh grabbed 4-74.
