Gayle: My objective is to entertain fans

West Indian power hitter Chris Gayle said he is happy to be a part of the BPL T20 once again and eager to open the innings with another explosive batsman of his generation, New Zealander Brendon McCullum, for their franchise Rangpur Riders. “It is good to be back in Bangladesh and be a part of BPL once again. I am looking forward to another new team and in the first game [Saturday], hopefully, we can get off to a good start to get the team back in winning ways. It is great to be among the squad,” Gayle told the media Friday. “We know how destructive McCullum is. It is a privilege to open the batting with him again. We opened together way back in the IPL (Indian Premier League). Now we are joining forces together again. It is new for both of us to come in and go for a blast but we have experience. The expectation is high on us to deliver. We want to try our best and win the game [Saturday].

“Everyone in Bangladesh wants to be entertained by two great entertainers in myself and McCullum. This is why the pressure is going to be on us. But we expect these things. The crowd is going to be very noisy. It is going to be fantastic if we can get off to a start, hitting a lot of boundaries and get the crowd excited. Maybe the other guys can build up from it and see what total we can set or get,” he said. Gayle is well known throughout the cricket world for his destructive nature of batting. The left hander has scored 10,571 runs in his overall T20 career with a strike rate of 147.97 and sixes count of 772. With his big hitting ability, Gayle is aiming to entertain the Bangladesh crowd yet again. “Most time I go out to bat my objective is to entertain the fans. They have spent money to want to be entertained. Sometimes I get into trouble by trying to hit too many sixes. When it comes off, it is brilliant and everyone is happy,” he explained.

“Normally I don’t plan on the number of sixes in a competition. Hopefully I get off to a good start tomorrow and maybe set the momentum for the tournament,” he added. Fans are expecting a blistering opening partnership from Rangpur as Gayle and McCullum are expected to open the innings for the Riders today. But Gayle informed that they need to play according to plan in order to give Rangpur a good start.“Me and McCullum have to work on our game plan. There’s nothing to prove between me and McCullum. We just have to go out there, enjoy it and exploit the condition and play according to the situation. If a particular bowler needs to be taken down, we will work on it as much as possible,” he said. “I don’t know how much I need to reach 11,000 runs but it is nine games to go. It is about getting back to the groove. I know what to expect in these conditions and I am looking forward to the challenge,” the 38-year old concluded.
