“They didn’t know about us before the heat but after I finished my run, they were surprised to know that Bangladesh also have sprinters. Some even asked me if Bangladesh are a country of sprinters,” said Jahir.“The coaches helped me a lot. I did some extra practise of my own, sometimes at night in my room. I had to work hard for this achievement,” added the BKSP athlete following his return home. Bangladesh’s performance in the major regional games – the SA Games – recently has been below average. They failed to win a single medal out of the men’s 20 events in the athletics discipline in the last edition held in India last year.

Jahir hoped to end the drought. “My first concentration will be the next SA Games. We have not won a medal there for a long time. If I can improve my timing a little bit then I can earn Bangladesh a medal there,” he said, adding that he is also preparing for the next Youth Olympic Games, scheduled to be held in Argentina in 2018.
