Whether or not you’re a fan of fantasy shows, the show-runners of American Gods have proven that there’s no such thing as “unfilmable”. This has given countless Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett fans the hope of seeing their favourite books brought to life onscreen. If you’re one of those legions of fans, we’ve got the best news for you. The cult hit Good Omens, the only collaboration of two fantasy titans Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, is getting its own television adaptation.
A mini-series based on the story about how the Armageddon got thwarted by an unlikely partnership between a fussy angel and a demon with a good heart, slated for a 2018 release, has been picked up by Amazon Studios. All six of the planned episodes for the mini-series have been adapted by Neil Gaiman himself, and the author is one of the show-runners.
The good news continues: fan favourites Michael Sheen and David Tennant will be playing the lead roles of Aziraphale and Crowley respectively.
We’re not the only ones giddy at the news. Michael Sheen is reportedly ecstatic “I first read ‘Good Omens’ as a teenager and it’s been one of my favourite stories ever since,” Sheen said in a statement to Variety magazine. “To be part of the team entrusted with bringing it alive on screen is a bit of a dream come true to be honest. To work alongside Neil [Gaiman], who I think is one of the greatest storytellers of all time, is incredibly exciting. And, just like the rest of the world, I’m a huge fan of David’s [Tennant] so I relish trying to save it with him.”
Good Omens is co-produced by BBC Studios with Narrativia, the production company of Pratchett’s daughter Rhianna, and the Blank Corporation and in association with BBC Worldwide for Amazon Prime Video and the BBC.
