Moonwalk meets box office thunder -- and the result is nothing short of electric.

Antoine Fuqua’s “Michael” is dancing past expectations, emerging as one of the year’s most explosive theatrical events.

The Michael Jackson biopic is now eyeing a $94–100 million domestic debut, with its global opening set to soar beyond the $200 million mark -- numbers that have stunned even the most optimistic projections.

Fuelled by a powerful Friday haul of $38.5 million, the film has struck a chord across audiences, particularly among Black and female moviegoers, driving a turnout that feels less like a release and more like a cultural moment.

Internationally, the King of Pop’s legacy is proving just as magnetic, with overseas earnings tracking around $114 million and markets like Japan poised to amplify the frenzy.

Originally forecast to open far lower, Michael is now not only rewriting expectations for music biopics but also positioning itself among the biggest genre debuts in cinematic history -- handing Lionsgate one of its strongest openings in years.

Early momentum was undeniable.

A robust $12.6 million from previews signaled the storm to come, but it’s the audience reception that has truly powered its surge. With a striking 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A- CinemaScore, viewers have embraced the film with fervour -- even as critics remained divided.

Fuqua’s decision to spotlight Jackson’s early rise, culminating in the iconic Bad tour era, has reignited debate around the star’s complex legacy. Yet, for audiences, the spectacle, nostalgia and emotional pull seem to outweigh the controversy.

Across 82 international markets, Michael has already claimed the No 1 spot in the majority, setting records for music biopics in territories from the UK to Brazil. Premium formats, particularly IMAX, have further amplified its box office rhythm, accounting for a significant share of revenue.

In a cinematic landscape hungry for event films, Michael has arrived not just as a movie -- but as a phenomenon.
