The Berlin International Film Festival aka Berlinale is the among the five major film festivals held around the world. Berlinale brings the big stars of international cinema to Berlin and discovers new talents. This year, Bangladeshi film professionals have secured a spot in Berlinale Talents, the FIPRESCI jury, and the OST of an official selection.
Filmmaker Maksud Hossain has been selected for Berlinale Talents. According to their website 201 young talents from 123 countries have been chosen from a competitive pool of 3,836 applicants. Maksud’s debut film “Saba” starring Mehazabien Chowdhury charmed critics and audiences during its world premier last year in the Discovery Programme of the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada. The film then traveled across the globe all the way to Busan.
Bangladeshi film critic Bidhan Rebeiro is set to serve as a FIPRESCI jury member at the festival. He also was a FIPRESCI jury member at the 75th Cannes Film Festival in 2022. He will leave Dhaka on February 9 to attend the event.
The Indian Bengali film "Baksho Bondi" (Shadowbox) featuring the title track "Shudhu Takar Jonno" by Tabib Mahmud and Rana Mridha is screening at the festival. In 2023, Tabib and Rana’s "Chap Nai" was featured in "Kaala" on Disney Hotstar.
The festival will start from February 13 and conclude on February 23, 2025.
