‘Latika’ selected at prestigious Visions Du Reel market

 Filmmaker Shopoon says that he is very happy and excited that his film 'Latika' has been officially selected in the Swiss film market

Bangladeshi film” Latika” has officially entered Switzerland's popular 55th Visions Du Reel international film festival VdR-Film Market 2024. Funded by British Council-UK, this short documentary film is produced by filmmaker and producer Samsul Islam Shopoon. The story of “Latika” revolves around a struggling woman and her family from the traditional Malo community on the banks of Chitra river in Narail district of Bangladesh. Her husband Shyam Biswas is a fisherman. A moving picture of their strained family with their two children and three pairs of otters emerge.

In 2022, filmmaker Shopoon won the 'International Collaboration Grant' for the production of the film “Latika” through a competition organized jointly by Dhaka DocLab and WOW-Wales One World Film Festival, funded by the British Council-UK. Moreover, his other full-length documentary film called “Bhodor Majhir Itiktha-The tale of an angler and his otters” has won the “Exposition of Young Film Talent 2022” Project Award organized by Muktijuddha Museum and Liberation Docfest Bangladesh. Filmmaker Shopoon says that he is very happy and excited that his film “Latika” has been officially selected in the Swiss film market. Moreover, he got the opportunity to participate for the first time as a Bangladeshi filmmaker in the Swiss VdR-film market. 3 more Bangladeshi films have been selected including “Latika”. All manufacturers except Shopoon are said to be foreign. In this festival, more than 1300 film producers, directors, distributors, buyers and sellers from different countries of the world will participate in this festival in person and online.

Visions du Real (Visions of Reality) is an internationally renowned documentary film festival held annually in Nyon, Switzerland from 12-21 April. The producer has already received invitations to attend the film market in person. After this film festival, the producer is scheduled to go to Paris, France. There he will meet with the French producer on his upcoming animation project “Otter Water”. He said that this animation film project will be made based on Bangladeshi climate and environment. Moreover, “Latika” had its regional premiere at Chittagong International Film Festival last February. Moreover, the 23rd Wow-Wales One World Film Festival-2024 was held in England in March. “Latika” had its UK premiere there.

In 2004, Swopoon produced his first short documentary film “Turager Nouka”. Since then, he has produced more than fifty short documentaries, short films, commercials, OVCs. Worked as copyright, art director, director and producer in several domestic and foreign film production houses. Currently, the filmmaker has been living in a fishing village on the banks of the Chitra river for 3 years. There he is shooting for a long time "Bhodor Majhir Itikatha -The tale of an angler and his otters". Writing screenplays for animation films like “Otter Water” sitting on location.

Director Samsul Islam Shopoon 's paternal grandfather’s home is in Tongi of Gazipur district but he was born in a fishing village on the banks of Titas river in Brahmanbaria, where is his maternal grandmother’s home. From a place of childhood love and interest in otters, he is currently writing a book on the 600-year history of traditional Malo fishermen on the banks of the Chitra river in Narail district, research on extinct otters including its origins. Moreover, besides the overall cooperation of local and foreign mentors, he participated in various meetings and seminars online sitting in Jelapally.

The filmmaker also shared his ordeal with us – last week he fell physically ill in the intense heat while shooting in Jele Para. Moreover, the filmmaker's elder brother film producer Saiful Islam Sajal has been ill for some time. Now both of them are staying at Tongi International Medical College and Hospital in their locality. The filmmaker has sought prayers from all the countrymen for him and his brother.
