Rajkumar Hirani has confirmed that a sequel to “3 Idiots” is in development, with Aamir Khan, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi set to reprise their roles.
Speaking to ANI, Hirani said the team is currently working on the script and will only proceed once they are satisfied with the story.
“Kahani likhi jaa rahi hai; we are still writing. Once it reaches the right point, then we will talk about it. Abhi toh we are still writing. Casting will be the same,” Hirani said.
The filmmaker revealed that the sequel emerged from a story he and his team were developing separately. During the writing process, they realized the idea could fit into the world of “3 Idiots”.
“We were writing another story, and then it felt like the story we had written would fit into this second part,” Hirani explained.
Unlike the 2009 film, which followed three engineering students during their college years, the proposed sequel will move the story forward by around 20 years.
“It’s not about the students; it’s about 20 years later ab kya hota hai unki life main,” Hirani said.
The original film starred Aamir Khan as Rancho, R Madhavan as Farhan, and Sharman Joshi as Raju. Kareena Kapoor Khan, Boman Irani, and Omi Vaidya were also part of the cast.
Hirani, however, stressed that the sequel has not been finalized yet. The project will move forward only if the writing reaches a stage where he and his team are confident in the story.
“3 Idiots”, released in 2009, became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of its time and remains one of Hirani’s most widely celebrated films.
