BRSSS to observe death anniversary of Kalim Sharafi

Bangladesh Rabindra Sangeet Shilpi Shongstha (BRSSS) will observe the eleventh death anniversary of prominent singer Kalim Sharafi on Monday, November 1. The online event will take place on the official Facebook page of BRSSS at 8pm.
Artistes remembering the late singer at the event will include prominent singers and members of BRSSS- Ashraful Alam, Rafiqul Alam, Sadi Mohammad, and Mahmud Selim.
BRSSS started its journey on May 27, 1988 to evoke interest in Rabindra Sangeet and to create a platform for young Tagore singers. Sharafi was one of the presidents of this organization that routinely arranges such events.
Kalim Sharafi was born in West Bengal in 1924. He was actively involved with politics taking part in Quit India movement against the British colonial rule, the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971 and movement against the war criminals in 1991.
He was a member of Popular Theatre Association, which is referred to as Bharatiyo Gononatya Shangha in Bangla. He co-directed the film, “Sonar Kajol” (1962) alongside Zahir Raihan.
For his illustrious career and contribution in the cultural arena, he received several awards, including Ekushey Padak in 1985 and Shadhinota Padak in 1999. He received the first Rabindra Award 2010 for his contribution in promoting and preserving Tagore songs.
The singer died at his residence on November 2, 2010 at the age of 86.
