The 14th Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA) unveiled the winners of this year’s top awards at a ceremony held on Australia's Gold Coast, on Thursday, November 11.
Bangladeshi actor Azmeri Haque Badhon won the Best Actress award for her performance in "Rehana Maryam Noor."
Hamaguchi Ryusuke’s “Drive My Car” won the Best Feature and director Abdullah Mohammad Saad bagged the second prize or the Jury Grand Prize for his second feature "Rehana Maryam Noor."
Previously, the film made it to the “Un Certain Regard” section of the 74th Cannes Film Festival as the first Bangladeshi feature and the only South Asian film to have ever been selected in this section.
“We are so happy and honoured to have this award. Thanks to the honourable jury. We are absolutely thrilled and excited. This film was a result of incredible team effort. I am sure I would not have won this award without the sacrifice of my crew and cast,” Saad said during his acceptance speech.
Badhon competed for the "Best Actress" accolade alongside Alena YIV, Valentina Romanova Chyskyyray, Leah Purcell, and Essie Davis.
"Azmeri Haque Badhon is a well-known model and television actress in Bangladesh whose career took off after winning the runner-up prize in a popular beauty pageant. Rehana Maryam Noor is her first major role in a feature film that went on to become the first Bangladeshi film ever to be selected in Official Competition at Cannes.
Formally trained in dental surgery, Badhon is a single mother, living in Dhaka with her 10-year old daughter. She is an advisor to a non-profit organization that works for youth and has been a consistent vocal about women’s empowerment, gender equality and mental illness," read the nomination details from the APSA website.
