“Joler Chhobi, Maatir Chhobi Film Festival” took place on June 22 and 23 at Burigoalini Forest Govt. Primary School, Shyamnagar, Satkhira.

The four curated films were made by two Bangladeshi and two Indian filmmakers. They told stories of their childhood in the wetlands, lifelines swelling rivers, communities coping with climate change and floods, migration, and trafficking.

The four films chosen were “Are You Listening” (Kamar Ahmed Simon, Bangladesh) “Char, No Man's Land” (Sourav Sarangi, India), “Nonajoler Kabbo” ( Rezwan Shahriar Sumit, Bangladesh) and “From the Shadows” (Miriam Chandy Menacherry, India).

Shahriar Sumit said, “In this era of globalisation, a truly developed and prosperous society can be built only through cultural exchanges. The relations between our two countries will deepen through artistic initiatives, especially those that extend beyond city limits and include people living on the margins.”

India's Miriam Chandy Menacherry and Rezwan Shahriar Sumit from Bangladesh met in America at the“Global Media Makers Film Residency” at the cultural exchange supported by the US State Department of Education and Cultural Affairs with Film Independent. They made the decision to collaborate and share their films in each other's countries.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for me to share my documentary ‘From the Shadows' about survivors of child trafficking that took me 6 years to capture, back with the people it most affects. It is going to be a worthwhile adventure with fellow filmmakers whose work I greatly love and respect, also rooted in the Sundarbans” says Miriam Chandy Menacherry.

After each film ended, villagers had the opportunity to interact with the filmmakers about the stories from their shores and the fluid border that connects both countries.
