Member of Parliament (MP) and folk singer Momotaz Begom has recently come under scrutiny about comments made during a Parliamentary session.

In the 12 minute long video Momotaz was seen stating, “Travelling hawkers carry their wares, looking for customers. We often hear ‘ ‘Bangles here, brother come for Bangles'. We will have a similar situation with electricity. We will go about peddling electricity, ‘Electricity here, come for electricity' but we will not find customers.”

Her comments have sparked backlash due to the current state of frequent load shedding caused by an inadequate supply of electricity.

Responding to the situation Momotaz said, “I saw on Facebook someone saying Momotaz's house has been surrounded because there is no electricity! This is a lie, propaganda.”

The MP alleged that statement was about the people under her constituency. She claims that prior to her election, 30% of people in her constituency were covered by electricity which has now allegedly risen to 100%.

“When I had said that, the electricity situation was good. A hundred percent of the people in my area have electricity. We have to face this temporary situation with patience. We have to try to reduce our electricity consumption. There is no use in pointing fingers and slinging mud,” says the singer.

She alleges that her words are being misinterpreted on social media. Momotaz Begom states, “I said the right thing at the right time. This problem (load shedding) will be temporary, you and I did not know about it at the time.”
