In the finale of HBO's acclaimed drama “Succession,” will Conner's (Alan Ruck) new wife Willa's (Justine Lupe) new proclamation get in the way of him becoming the next ambassador to Slovenia.
The series known for its unforeseen rises and falls, Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong) fell hard. Strong commented on Kendall's fate as a state of “suspended animation, neither alive nor dead, hopeful or hopeless.” He says, “I think some people felt like this moment might pass. Maybe he'll have a life. Maybe he'll get up off of that bench and walk in a different direction, and maybe have some version of a life.”
In the finale, Kendall reveals his father promised him the kingdom when he was 7 years old. Strong states, “But in a way, that's where the seeds of destruction are. The child is tethered to the man. It's a promise, and also, it's a sentence. He doesn't really have a chance. His father says, “One day, this will all be yours.” And that becomes his reason for being, and his only reason for being. The loss of that, finally, that we see in this episode, is an extinction-level event.”
Alan Ruck found the ending to be a “brilliant' wrap up, not knowing exactly what Kendall's fate is going to be, where Connor and Willa stand but he does believe that maybe he won't go to Slovenia. “It all makes perfect sense”, says Ruck.
The critic darling “Secession” focused on the power struggle between the children of media mogul Logan Roy. After four seasons the finale aired on Sunday, May 28 hitting 2.9 million views but it remained behind other HBO hits.
