Kokilaben steps down from Saath Nibhaana Saathiya

Rupal Patel, popularly known as the mother-in-law from hell ‘Kokilaben’, has confirmed that she is exiting the show

Update : 02 Nov 2020, 08:35 PM

After working for only one month on the second season of Saath Nibhaana Saathiya, Rupal Patel is now stepping down from her iconic role Kokilaben. She will no longer be seen as Gopi Bahu's stern and frightening mother-in-law, and said that her character arc is complete.

The actor revealed that she returned to the second season to make her fans happy, and it was her ‘moral responsibility as a creative artist.’

She said in an interview, “When I was approached with the sequel of Saath Nibhana Saathiya it was for one month only. And now that a month is over, I will be making my exit from the show which was planned.”

“I said yes for this small journey in SNS 2 only because it’s my gratitude to all the fans of Kokilaben and Rupal Patel. I have received so much love from my audience especially for this character and the show that when makers came to me with this idea for joining and supporting them to uplift this it was my moral responsibility as a creative artist to say a yes for it.”

In August, the character of Kokilaben became a viral sensation after a rap song titled Rasode Mein Kaun Tha, taken from a heated scene by musician Yashraj Mukhat from Starplus’ Sath Nibhana Sathiyan, had taken the internet by storm.

The hilarious rap song sparked a meme fest online, and made the internet want to know why Rashi put the empty cooker on the gas and threw the channa away. Rupal Patel’s character became a household name if it already was not so, and garnered the actor critical praise for her dramatic role.

Patel expressed her wish to play similar tough characters. “I have always played strong characters and I give that credit to my personality. And I am sure future roles will also be offered to me keeping my personality and my contribution towards such strong characters only. Right now I don’t have any other show in my hand but I am very hopeful that soon something will come my way. I am very open to playing strong characters again. Like a Dabangg Saas who is all positive and with her family.”

The 45-year-old actor had previously played the role of Meenakshi Rajvansh in popular drama series Yeh Rishtey Hain Pyaar Ke and collaborated with director Shyam Benegal in several films.
