Webinar to discuss road safety on Tareque Masud’s 9th death anniversary

Catherine Masud will attend the online seminar

Update : 12 Aug 2020, 04:21 PM

August 13 will mark the 9th death anniversary of Tareque Masud and Mishuk Munier, two luminaries who were killed in a gruesome road crash in 2011.

To mark this tragic day and the ongoing fight towards ending impunity for road fatalities, BLAST and Tort Law Project Bangladesh are organizing a webinar titled Accountability for Road Crashes: Compensation under the Road Transport Act 2018 on Thursday, August 13, at 8.00 PM.

The online seminar will be broadcasted live from BLAST’s official Facebook page.

Renowned filmmaker Tareque Masud, and media personality Ashfaque Munier Mishuk, were killed in an accident on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway, in Manikganj in 2011.

A verdict by the High Court, in that road accident case, highlighted Shortcomings in implementing the Motor Vehicle Ordinance of 1983.

Some of these shortcomings have been addressed in the new Road Transport Act. But experts claim that the Act has loopholes and may even have regressed from the previous law.

Road safety experts say the recent student protests demanding road safety are the outcome of these failures, since people continue to die in road accidents. And there is no solution in sight.
