Met carpet 2017

Apart from what goes on behind the scenes of one of the most exclusive events of the year in fashion, the Met Gala is basically a moving exhibition of outlandish and sometimes awe-inspiring artwork. Technically, it’s the opening of the Costume Institute’s annual show. This particular “red carpet” is a showcase for elite designers that put their one-off pieces on celebrities. Some looks come straight off the runway with minor alteration – a look that’s never been seen before. In addition, there are looks built completely from scratch, exaggerating the red carpet’s overall purpose. This year’s theme at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between. In other words, every look had to be the ideal example of what it means to be avant-garde, while keeping within the tradition of each designer’s signature designs.   Lily-Rose Depp Cara DelevingneCara Delevingne kept the sci-fi, lost in the stars flavour going after the release of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. This silver Chanel suit, matching her hair, is all she needed to stand out from the rest.  Lily-Rose Depp followed this year with yet another Chanel number. The fuchsia ball gown is embellished with silver camellias.       Lily Aldridge Ruth NeggaLily Aldridge put a mean definition to be cutting edge and sexy in a white, silky and slinky Ralph Lauren dress. Taking it a bit further, the latex Balenciaga boots created the perfect accent to the thigh-high slit of the dress.

Ruth Negga continues to swoon Hollywood in a very subtle manner, just like the classic choice of Valentino, presented as a monastic silhouette. Her cornrows put in a splash of indulgent swagger as well.

Rihanna in possibly the most avant-garde look of the night, borrowing the entire ensemble from the Comme des Garçons autumn/winter 2016 collection.
