Back in 2015, Ed Sheeran announced that he was taking a break from social media. The British singer-songwriter wanted to travel the world, explore what he might have missed all these years. In 2017, Sheeran came back in style with his third solo album Divide, which has 16 tracks on the deluxe edition. The album is full of experiments but sounds great.
First up, “Shape of you” and “Castle on the hill” are the two lead singles of this album which were initially released online. Since then, “Shape of you” has managed to break all the records by being on the top charts and moved on to become the most popular song in Ed’s career yet. The song was initially written by Ed for Rihanna but he later decided to use it for his album. The groovy composition and catchy lyrics makes you want to play the song on repeat. “Castle on the hill,” on the other hand, is all about Ed’s childhood memories. The lyrics are really beautiful and almost everyone can relate and recall their childhood memories with this song.
“Eraser” also reflects Ed’s journey so far and how he has evolved as a human being and a musician.
Another song, “Save myself”, is a dark piano driven track reflecting the broken heart of Sheeran. Ed sings, “Before I save someone else/I’ve got to save myself.” The lyrics speak about how Ed is now more mature than ever; not only in his professional life but also in his personal life.
“Galway girl” is a rap track which is certainly one of the coolest songs in the album. The sound of the fiddle gives this track an Irish flavor which is hard to not love. “Perfect” is another song that every couple would like as their wedding song to dance to. The song has the distinct Ed Sheeran vibe in it and is incredibly melodious, romantic and accompanied by great lyrics. On the other hand, “Happier” is ironically a sad number about lost love where the pain in Ed’s voice seems to reflect back on a regret from his past.
If you’re looking for campfire songs, “Hearts don’t break” should make the list. The song is about finding the special one in someone’s life and being grateful about it.
“How would you feel” is yet another sweet ballad filled with romance which was written by Ed for his girlfriend. John Mayer played the guitar solo for this track.
The track, “Super flower market” has been written from Ed’s mother’s perspective and what she had to go through when Ed’s grandmother passed away during the recording of the album. The song serves as a tribute to Ed’s grandmother.
In “New man” Sheeran talks about one of his ex’s new boyfriend and is absolutely hilarious. “Barcelona” can be a great party song while “Dive” is a raspy gem exploring longing and frustration. “Bibia be ye ye,” “What do I know” and “Nancy Mulligan” are also great in their own merits and can do wonders in fixing your mood.
All in all, Divide is an album that has everything the music lovers are looking for. Check it out.
