Last year, director Karan Johar announced an ambitious project — a biopic on the life of hockey legend Dhyan Chand. Rumours suggest that Varun Dhawan was initially approached to play the lead role, which he turned down at the time. It was speculated that Karan and Varun weren’t too keen on Rohit Vaid helming the biopic. Issues with the script were also cited as reasons for the stalemate. Another hold-up was that, it was impossible to oust the director from the project since he holds the rights to the film. Vaid developed the script after a meeting with co-producers Pooja and Arti Shetty, who are collaborating with him in the film.
However, things have changed since Vaid won a national award for Mahayodha Ram, which took home the title of the Best Animated Film. Both Varun and Karan have been forced to rethink their stance. Moreover, Vaid has overhauled the script and is eager to approach Varun once again with the revised version.
Varun is currently busy with Judwaa 2 opposite Taapsee Pannu. It’s a sequel to one of the most iconic films from the 1990s, Judwaa. Varun will be seen playing Salman Khan’s double role in the remake of the film from 1997. Directed by David Dhawan, produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and Fox Star Studios, Judwaa 2 is set to be released on September 29 this year.
