Registration to attend a play by legendary West Bengali singer-songwriter, film director, and actor Anjan Dutt, to be staged in Dhaka, has begun

Anjan Dutt will stage his play “Salesman’er Shongshar” in the capital’s Bangladesh Shishu Academy on July 9, according to a recent Facebook video of the actor posted by Sajjad Hussain, the author of Anjan Dutt’s biography “Anjan Jatra.”

In the video, celebrated musician and actor Dutt said: “This is the first time I am coming to Dhaka to act on stage in a play. Along with my play, another book about me written by Sajjad Hussain will be launched on the same stage. This book is relevant to readers who have already read Sajjad’s ‘Anjan Jatra.’ The new book tells many untold stories which were not mentioned in the previous book. It focuses mainly on my theatre acting career. The book will be published by Bangladeshi publication house Chhapa Khanar Bhoot.”

Dutt also said he would sing some of his songs for his fans.

Author Sajjad Hussain told Dhaka Tribune’s Showtime: “I request everyone to register themselves online within May 20, as seats for the event are limited. Interested audience can register their tickets, each worth Tk2000, from the Facebook page of Chhapa Khanar Bhoot and Bar-Bee BD.”

The play “Salesman’er Shongshar,” directed by and starring Anjan Dutt, is an adaptation of Arthur Miller's famous play “Death of a Salesman.” Dutt himself will play the lead role of Willy Loman.

“Salesman’er Shongshar” was first staged in Kolkata in January this year, and was also staged at Kolkata’s Gyan Manch in April.

Although known for his music, Dutt is also an accomplished actor, having started his career in Bangla cinema. His first film was “Chalachitro,” directed by Mrinal Sen, for which he won the prize for the Best Newcomer in Acting at the Venice Film Festival. He also acted in Aparna Sen's hit film “Mr and Mrs Iyer.” In 2018, he featured in Swapnasandhani's play “Taraye Taraye,” as Vincent Van Gogh, under the direction of Kaushik Sen.

He is also a national award-winning filmmaker and is one of the most prominent directors of West Bengal, directing acclaimed films such as “The Bong Connection,” “Chalo-Let's Go,” and “Ranjana Ami Ar Ashbona.”

In recent years, he directed the “Byomkesh Bakshi” film series.
