Special television programs on Independence Day

Each year Bangladeshi television channels air numerous special programs on the occassion of Independence Day. The Dhaka Tribune’s Showtime desk brings you some of the Independence Day specials you might enjoy

Deepto TV

Documentary film “Merciless Mayhem: The Bangladesh Genocide through Pakistani Eye” will aired on Deepto TV at 4:30pm on Independence Day.

The 61-minute film tells the story of the genocide in Bangladesh during the 1971 Liberation War through the eyes of a group of Pakistanis. The documentary features interviews of Pakistani journalists and government officials who shared their experiences of the genocide committed by Pakistani occupation forces in 1971.

Directed by Fuad Chowdhury, the documentary reveals the conspiracy of West Pakistan in the 1970 general election and the subsequent war that gave birth to Bangladesh in 1971.

Chowdhury interviewed author Tarek Fatah, journalist Tariq Khan, former Federal Secretary of the then Pakistan government Roedad Khan, and Roshan Zamir, who is another former federal secretary, and who also worked in Khulna during the Liberation War, among others.

Besides the interviews, the documentary also contains video footage of speeches by then Pakistan President Yahya Khan and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, which were aired on different television channels.

Duranta TV

A three-episode-long special program “Ekattorer March” has begun on Duranta TV, Bangladesh’s only children content channel, from March 25 on the occasion of Independence Day.  

Asif Munir Tanmoy, son of martyred intellectual Munir Chowdhury will be featured in the program. Asif will travel around the city including Dhaka University’s Madhur Canteen, Jagannath Hall, then the Race Course field, which is currently in Suhrawardy Udyan, Liberation War Museum, Rajarbagh Police Line, Old Dhaka's Shankhari Bazar, Pilkhana or the EPR Headquarters at that time. They talk to eyewitnesses who saw 1971 from these locations. Shaheed Munir Chowdhury's wife Lili Chowdhury, freedom fighter Nasiruddin Yusuf Bachchu, artist Rafiqun Nabi, noted researcher Mufiid Ul Haque, painter and freedom fighter Abul Barak Alvi, freedom fighter and music artist Linu Billah, Shahid Jyotirmoy Guhathakurta’s children Meghna Guhathakurta, Shahid Madhusudan Dey's  (Madhu Da) son Amar Dey, freedom fighter and researcher Dr. Sarwar Ali, freedom fighter Tarek Ali and many more notable personalities will meet these children at these locations and tell them their experiences there during the war.

The other two special episodes of this series, directed by Monirul Hossain Shipon, will be aired at 9:30 pm on March 26 & 27.


Independence Day’s special TV drama “Shikar” will be aired on RTV today (March 26) at 8pm. The television drama, produced and directed by Masum Shahriar, was inspired by a true story which was adapted into screenplay by Mohammad Jamal Hossain.

The drama will feature Mamunur Rashid, Sabnam Faria, Irfan Sajjad, Sharmili Ahmed, Pavel Islam in the major roles.

Masum Shahriar said that the story “Shikar” is not exactly a story of the war. It tells a story of a small village right before the war begun. A young and talented local man suddenly turns mentally insane. There is no war in the whole story, yet the bleeding of the war is present. The audience can sense the inevitability of the war throughout the drama.
