The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is known for using classic rock numbers in their comic-book-based blockbuster films.
MCU uses these songs wonderfully in their films, such as “Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” “Captain America,” “Guardians of Galaxy,” “Avengers,” etc.
These classic rock songs have made the awesome movies even better. Fans of classic bands like AC/DC, Black Sabbath, and Led Zeppelin get a rock n’ roll vibe in their beloved superhero movies.
Additionally, in “Captain Marvel,” the MCU takes soundtracks to a whole new level.
Most of the songs play in the background, but for the first time, Marvel uses popular music to emphasize the film’s setting.
As the film is set in 1995, the film’s score features that time period; maintaining Marvel’s signature style of using popular rock songs.
Recently, we have seen how “Stranger Things,” has added period clues to bring out nostalgia. The story of the sci-fi thriller is set in the '80s, and the clues littered throughout the show hark back memories of that generation.
In a similar manner, in “Captain Marvel” there is a video store that Carol crashes into, plus her undercover outfit consists of a Nine Inch Nails t-shirt and some flannel, representing the marvellous '90s.
We have compiled the '90s songs featured in the film's scenes and over the end credits:
"Come As You Are" by Nirvana: Nirvana does not need an introduction. They were one of the best things that happened to music world in the '90s. "Come As You Are" is the most popular song played during a crucial moment in the movie. The song was featured in the band’s album, titled, “Nevermind."
"Man on the Moon" by R.E.M.: R.E.M. was another of the biggest bands of the '90s. Their “Man on the Moon" and "Crush with Eyeliner” are featured in “Captain Marvel.”
"Only Happy When it Rains” by Garbage: What could have been a more perfect song to play in this movie, than one of an alternative rock girl-led group from the '90s? Originally, the song was released in 1995 on their eponymous album.
"Whatta Man" by Salt-N-Pepa feat. En Vogue: Another hit number of this decade plays in “Captain Marvel” when Carol first crashes into Earth.
"Celebrity Skin" by Hole: It is so ironic, the film features songs by both Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love. Hole’s song plays over the credits of the film. This song was in the band’s 1998 album "Celebrity Skin."
"Just a Girl" by No Doubt: How could a female-led superhero film miss this 90's girl power anthem? It is no surprise that the song plays over one of the biggest action scenes in “Captain Marvel.”
"Waterfalls” by TLC: TLC was an immensely popular girls’ trio in the '90s. Their songs were played on every radio station across the US, and all over the world. This song—which spent seven weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1995—plays during a decisive moment of the film.
"You Gotta Be" by Des'ree: British singer Des'rees’s R&B hit plays quietly in the background Captain Marvel first arrives in Louisana.
“Connection” by Elastica: A very popular track of this decade. “Connection” is played early in the movie. The song was originally released in 1994 as a single and the album version was not released until 1995 on their self-titled debut album.
