Hungarian love story wins top honour at Berlin Film Festival

The drama directed by Ildiko Enyedi, one of the four female filmmakers in competition, features graphic scenes in a slaughterhouse set against the budding romance of two people who share a recurring dream.PoActing awards went to Georg Friedrich for Bright Nights, and Kim Min-hee for On the Beach at Night Alone, while the prize for the festival’s best director went to Aki Kaurismaki for a European refugee comedy, The Other Side of Hope. The Hungarian filmmaker, Ildiko Enyedi thanked the festival for embracing her first full-length feature in 18 years. Moreover, she spoke about the difficult working conditions in the country under its current Prime Minister Viktor Orban. “We live in a more and more absurd country, frighteningly absurd country,” she expressed. Led by filmmaker Paul Verhoeven, the international jury, which also included Maggie Gyllenhaal and Diego Luna - “fell in love” with On Body and Soul, as Verhoeven said in a statement. The awards were announced at a ceremony in Berlin on Saturday night, at the conclusion of the 67th edition of Berlin International Film Festival that commenced on February 9.    Major winners of Berlin 2017:
